Is it OK for a man to be submissive?

Yes, it is OK for a man to be submissive. You do not owe anyone a justification for it, and wanting it does not diminish your worth.

Most men who ask this question are asking from a feeling of shame or low self-worth. You may already know something about what you want and still feel embarrassed by what you think it says about you. Discovering a submissive side can feel like a low point, especially if you grew up believing that a man should always take control.

That feeling is misplaced. There is nothing degrading about having this desire. Holding on to the belief that it makes you lesser does real harm, particularly while you are still working out who you are and what you actually like. It makes honest feelings into evidence against yourself.

You have nothing to compensate for

Being submissive does not make you less of a man. You can work a physically demanding job, be a good father, and be tough when toughness is needed. A man can spend his afternoon repairing a fence, pick up his child from school, and enjoy following his partner’s lead in bed that evening. None of those things cancels out another.

But being manly is not what makes submission acceptable. You do not have to earn it by being hard anywhere else. If you are soft and gentle, it fits you just as well. Neither hardness nor softness is a requirement or a detriment, and you have nothing to compensate for.

Being submissive in bed, during a scene, or in one part of your life says nothing about who you must be the rest of the time. Enjoying a woman telling you what to do for an evening does not oblige you to organize your whole life around submission.

“My cute, lovely, submissive husband looks like a 6ft lumberjack and works in banking. That doesn’t stop me from finding him adorable.”

Shame can get in the way of something you want

Worrying about whether you are allowed to want submission can keep you from enjoying it. You keep returning to the question even after the answer is clear, until the question itself becomes the obstacle.

That can cost you something real. You connect with a woman who likes your submissive side, then back away because you cannot get past your shame. People lose someone who suited them this way. The attraction was there, and so was the possibility of a relationship, but accepting being wanted in that way felt too difficult.

People get past that initial fear all the time. Often, they start by talking with someone who understands or meeting other submissive men. As those conversations become ordinary, they realize that the fear was the only problem with a desire they had spent so long judging.

“It’s one thing to be open to degradation when I’m in my subspace. It’s a different thing to be confident in my life outside. It took me time to realize those two go together. It’s liberating.”

Other submissive men are easy to find

You are not alone, and you do not have to search somewhere obscure to find people like you. Other submissive men talk on Reddit and FetLife. They attend munches, relaxed local meetups for people into kink. When you meet them, they turn out to be normal people with familiar interests and everyday concerns. You can talk about submission, then carry on talking about a hobby you share.

For meeting a partner, Chyrpe is a dating app for people who want these kinds of connections. It looks and works much like Tinder, Hinge or Bumble. Wanting a woman who enjoys taking the lead can also be part of finding someone compatible through an ordinary dating app.

A lot of shame comes from picturing femdom as something dark, confined to a dungeon or the seedy corners of the internet. That picture leaves out the people in your hometown bar who enjoy it. It leaves out the people on the same forum where you discuss your hobby, and the people meeting through an app that looks like the ones everyone uses.

Once you encounter it in those familiar places, you begin to notice how real and common it is. Submission is one of the most common things men want. The proportion of men who report submissive fantasies or interests is as high as 81% in some studies (Lehmiller, largest US fantasy survey) and the rapid ascent of the Chyrpe app proves the appeal in its own right.

You may need time for the shame to ease, even when you understand that it is misplaced. You can give yourself that time and still allow yourself to talk openly, meet someone, and enjoy being wanted as you are.
